The benefits of membership
Membership will provide you with an information pack
on the illness and current treatments, plus an opportunity to learn more
through newsletters and local meetings. Members often find it valuable
to talk informally to other families at NACC meetings, but some people
also prefer just to receive information from the National Office or to
talk to NACC Contacts confidentially on a one-to-one basis.
New members receive a pack of booklets which
includes Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn's Disease, Living with IBD, and
Food and IBD. Each member also receives a national Newsletter every
three months. (Other booklets and information sheets are available on
request.)
The Association gives members a combined Membership
and 'Can't Wait' Card, which is renewed annually. The card carries the
message 'Please help - our member has a medical condition which means they
need to use your toilet facilities urgently. Your kindness and
cooperation would be much appreciated'. The card is intended to
support you in the event that you need to ask to use the staff toilet
facilities in a shop, garage etc in an emergency. The card does not
guarantee that you will be allowed to use these facilities as companies
are not willing to give such a commitment, but it may confirm that you
have a genuine and urgent need. NACC encourages companies to allow
access to toilets as part of a good 'customer care' policy and from time
to time publicises the Can't Wait Card scheme to make retailers and
staff aware of the need.
There are NACC Groups in most parts of the United
Kingdom. If you give your permission, we will pass on your name to the
NACC group in your area. These Groups are run by local volunteers and
usually offer educational or support meetings, news of local publicity
and fund-raising activities, together with a local point of contact.
Other services include NACC-in-Contact, a national
network of trained volunteers, who offer confidential supportive
listening over the telephone, and a Welfare Fund which can make grants
to those in need. A list of NACC-in-Contact telephone numbers is
supplied to each new member.
NACC members have also contributed over£3 million
since 1984 to fund research projects at hospitals all around the UK. Our
Research Fund makes awards for new projects every year.
What it costs
As a new member you will pay £12 for your first year
which helps cover the cost of the booklets provided. After that you will
pay an annual subscription, currently £10 per year. (If you live outside
the UK it is £15 for the first year, and £12 thereafter - payable in
sterling). If you would like to apply for membership,
